I Am Evidence

Despite the power of DNA to solve and prevent crimes, hundreds of thousands of rape kits, containing crucial DNA evidence, are languishing untested in police-evidence storage rooms across the country. Behind each of these kits is a person, a sexual-assault survivor, who is still waiting for justice to be served. Produced by Mariska Hargitay and directed by Trish Adlesic and Geeta Gandbhir, I Am Evidence exposes the alarming trend of rape cases that go unsolved through a poignant, character-driven narrative that reveals how a flawed system has historically mistreated sexual-assault survivors. Profiling four resilient women in Detroit, Cleveland and Los Angeles as they trace the fates of their kits and re-engage in the criminal justice process, this powerful feature documentary also follows advocates who are tirelessly leading the charge to work through the backlog and hold perpetrators accountable. Putting a human face on an issue that has flown under the radar for far too long, I Am Evidence is a timely call to action for the nation, proving to survivors that they matter by bringing them closure and ending this injustice once and for all.
