Every day in Abitibi, over 700 people go to work at the La Ronde gold mine. Some of them climb aboard an elevator nicknamed “the cage”, which takes them nearly 3 kilometres below the earth’s surface. In this dark, isolated and dangerous environment where precious metal is collected, miners look out for one another because they’re more than just colleagues: they’re a tight-knit family that also socializes outside the mine, sharing meals with their real families or competing in friendly hockey games. This 5-part documentary miniseries looks at life in a region where gold is king, and where those who extract it are everyday heroes.
