TORONTO (November 4, 2014) – In the 13 years since her tragic death, fans and the music industry alike continue to hail Aaliyah Dana Haughton as an R&B music sensation lost far too soon. Based on the bestselling book Aaliyah: More Than a Woman by former Time music editor Christopher John Farley, AALIYAH: THE PRINCESS OF R&B premieres Saturday, Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. ET, exclusively on M3. The two-hour movie event depicts the performer’s STAR SEARCH debut at the age of 10, the challenges she faced during her quick rise to fame, the untimely plane crash that claimed her life, and the loss suffered by her loved ones.

Shot on location in Toronto, AALIYAH: THE PRINCESS OF R&B stars Alexandra Shipp (HOUSE OF ANUBIS and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel) as Aaliyah, A.J. Saudin (DEGRASSI) as Aaliyah’s brother Rashad Haughton, Anthony Grant (THE LISTENER) as Damon Dash, Izaak Smith (SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA, Season 1) as Timbaland, Clé Bennett (SENSITIVE SKIN) as R. Kelly, and Elise Neal (PRIVATE PRACTICE) as Gladys Knight.

Poised to become a global icon with top-selling albums, a rising film career, and an adoring fan-base, Aaliyah’s life was cut short in August 2001, at the height of her popularity, when a plane carrying her and a music video crew crashed after takeoff from a Bahamian runway. Though just 22-years-old at the time of her death, Aaliyah continues to be known as one of the most successful R&B artists in history.
