TORONTO (July 10, 2014) – HBO Canada presents the new10-episode drama series THE KNICK, premieringFriday, August 8 at 11 p.m.ET/MT. Directed by Academy Award® and EmmyAward®winner Steven Soderbergh (HBO’s BEHIND THE CANDELABRA),THE KNICK is set in 1900 at New York City’s KnickerbockerHospital, home to groundbreaking surgeons, nurses, and staff who push theboundaries of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zeroantibiotics. The series follows the newly appointed leader of surgery staff, Dr.John Thackery (Academy Award® and Emmy Award®nominee CliveOwen, (HBO’s HEMINGWAY AND GELLHORN), a brilliant, arrogant renegade,whose addiction to cocaine and opium is trumped only by his ambition for medicaldiscovery and renown among his peers.

In the seriespremiere, Dr. John Thackery, a brilliant yet tortured doctor working at theKnickerbocker Hospital in New York, ascends to the role of chief surgeon afterthe unexpected departure of his mentor, J.M. Christiansen (Canadian-raised MattFrewer, ORPHAN BLACK). Though Thackery wants Everett Gallinger (Canadian EricJohnson, ROOKIE BLUE), his own protégé, to take over the assistant chiefposition, Cornelia Robertson (Juliet Rylance, Days And Nights),daughter of Knickerbocker’s major benefactor, is insistent on hiring AlgernonEdwards (André Holland, 1600 PENN), a talented young doctor who trained inLondon and Paris. Edwards encounters enmity and resentment on his first day atthe Knick, but his desire to remain prevails after joining Thackery, Gallinger,Dr. Bertram ‘Bertie’ Chickering Jr. (Michael Angarano, The EnglishTeacher), and Nurse Lucy Elkins (Eve Hewson, Enough Said) in theoperating theatre for a daring surgical procedure.
