TORONTO (December 15, 2014) – Bell Media’s BravoFACT (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent) announced today the eight BravoFACTUAL award recipients from the December 11 jury meeting. A total of $360,000 was awarded to Canadian filmmakers for the production of short documentary films. This month, BravoFACT is also pleased to announce the addition of CTV’s W5 award-winning investigative reporter Victor Malarek as a guest juror.
Continuing to establish itself on both national and international platforms, it was announced earlier this week that David Ridgen’s BravoFACT-funded film Love Song for the Apocalypse, will have its world premiere at Utah’s Slamdance 2015 in January. Recent successes by BravoFACT-funded shorts also include five BravoFACT-funded films – Julia Julep, The Portal, The Match, Bastards, and Detention – that were represented at the 2014 Edmonton International Film Festival in September.

Beginning his career in 1968, Victor Malarek has been a prominent figure in the world of journalism for 46 years. Malarek made a name for himself as police reporter for The Montreal Star. Joining The Globe and Mail in 1981, Malarek won three Michener Awards over his 14-year career with the paper. During that period, he also wrote the autobiographical Hey Malarek, depicting the journalist’s turbulent early years, and life under Quebec’s child protection system, inspiring a feature film Malarek. Malarek earned a Gemini Award in 1997 and a fourth Michener Award for his work as host/reporter for the CBC program THE FIFTH ESTATE. Malarek moved to CTV’s W5 in 2000 as Senior Reporter, and continues to be an advocate for societal change over his 14 years with W5. Malarek has also penned the non-fiction books Haven’s Gate, Merchants of Misery, Gut Instinct, The Natashas – Inside The Global Sex Trade, The Johns – Sex for Sale and the Men Who Buy It, and most recently published his first novel Orphanage 41 which was inspired by his reporting on trafficked women.
