— December 31, 2016
REGINA (December 31, 2016) – CTV Regina today announced that Dr. Vianne Timmons has been named the 2016 Regina Citizen of the Year. Revealed on CTV NEWS AT SIX today by David Fisher, Vice-President and General Manager of CTV Saskatchewan, Dr. Timmons will receive the Award at a reception in early 2017.
“In her youth, Vianne first formed her vision to serve people with special needs and to advance literacy, learning, and inclusive education,” said Fisher. “As an adult, her unwavering commitment to these causes combined with her tireless service continues to improve the lives of so many.”
Dr. Timmons’ research in education and her community service have helped improve the lives of youth and adults with disabilities in Canada and in India. Her contributions have aided in the retention of Aboriginal students in Canadian universities, and realized essential literacy programs for rural families. She has supported Astonished!, a not-for-profit community group dedicated to enhancing the lives of young adults with physical disabilities, and is a strong advocate for Camp fYrefly, a residential summer camp for LGBTQ youth in Saskatchewan.
Since 2008, while under Dr. Timmons’ leadership as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Regina, the institution achieved record-breaking enrollment numbers, the creation of several new undergraduate and graduate level programs, and the establishment of a Faculty of Nursing. She also helped found the program Campus For All, allowing students with intellectual disabilities to participate in authentic university experiences.
The Regina Citizen of the Year Award presented by CTV is an annual tradition now in its 13th year. Each November, CTV accepts nominations from viewers for the Regina Citizen of the Year Award, and at the end of December, presents the award to an individual who exemplifies excellence in community service.
