CTV Programming Highlights: September 16 – 30

  The highly anticipated fall TV season begins as BLINDSPOT, QUANTICO, CODE BLACK, and BLOOD & OIL  make their series debuts, while THE BIG BANG THEORY, GREY’S ANATOMY, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., ONCE UPON A TIME, THE GOLDBERGS, CRIMINAL MINDS, THE AMAZING RACE, BLUE BLOODS, and CASTLE kickoff new season runs. CTV’s hit original drama SAVING HOPE returns for Season 4, and the live broadcast of THE 67th EMMY® AWARDS celebrates the biggest and best in television. Plus, September brings the season finale of CTV’s THE AMAZING RACE CANADA followed immediately by the live, one-hour, after-show special AFTER THE RACE. Wednesday, Sept. 16 8 p.m. – MASTERCHEF – “Team Gordon Ramsay/The Finale” – TWO HOURS – SEASON FINALE In the season finale of MASTERCHEF, the remaining three contestants get a little help from a few other home cooks in their next challenge: creating dishes for 30 restaurant guests who serve an important role in the judges’ culinary world. The home cook with the most number of votes advances to the finale, while the remaining two home cooks face the Pressure Test, during which they must complete three classic MASTERCHEF dishes. The home cook with the best dishes moves on to the Top 2. Then, in the final challenge, the Top 2 home cooks have one last chance to prove to the judges that they deserve the MASTERCHEF title by creating a three-course meal. After evaluating the final dishes, America’s next MASTERCHEF is revealed.   Thursday, Sept. 17 9 p.m. – THE AMAZING RACE CANADA – “Cabotage” – NEW EPISODE / SPECIAL NIGHT The final four teams race to Alberta’s capital, Edmonton, where teams step back in time and face off on the ice. Tempers explode as teams fight tooth-and-nail for their spot in the finale.   Sunday, Sept. 20 8 p.m. – 67th EMMY AWARDS – LIVE – SPECIAL Actor and comedian Andy Samberg hosts the biggest night in television, the 67th EMMY AWARDS, live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, which honours entertainment’s best in primetime television. Confirmed presenters include: star of new CTV mystery thriller BLINDSPOT, Jaimie Alexander and BAFTA® Award winner and host of CTV Two’s THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN, James Corden.   Monday, Sept. 21 7:30 p.m. – THE BIG BANG THEORY – “The Matrimonial Momentum” – SEASON PREMIERE – SPECIAL TIME After driving to Vegas to get married, Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) struggles with Leonard’s (Johnny Galecki) confession that he kissed another girl. Also, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) doesn't know how to act after Amy (Mayim Bialik) pushes pause on their relationship. 8 p.m. – GOTHAM – “Damned If You Do...” – SEASON PREMIERE Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) is King of Gotham and after a shakeup at the GCPD, Detective James Gordon’s (Ben McKenzie) moral compass wavers as he seeks help from him. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) continues to explore the secrets from his father’s office, while GOTHAM newcomers Theo Galavan (James Frain, TRUE DETECTIVE) and his sister, Tabitha (Jessica Lucas, GRACEPOINT), make friends with some unlikely allies – a group of dangerous inmates from Arkham Asylum. 9 p.m. – BLINDSPOT – “Pilot” – SERIES PREMIERE A beautiful, naked amnesiac (Jaimie Alexander) is found in Times Square covered in mysterious tattoos, including one bearing the name of FBI Agent Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton). Special Agent Weller and his FBI team must decode the map of clues on Jane Doe’s body in order to thwart a deadly terrorist attack. 10 p.m. – CASTLE – “XY” – SEASON PREMIERE – PART 1 OF 2 After passing the Captain’s exam in the Season 7 finale, Beckett (Stana Katic) was surprised with an offer to run for State Senate. In the action-packed season premiere, Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett are adjusting to Beckett’s career change, when a call from a mysterious stranger sets off an explosive chain of events. There are two sides to every story, and this unique two-parter explores the same story from each of their perspectives, first from Castle’s side.   Tuesday, Sept. 22 8 p.m. – THE VOICE – “The Blind Auditions Premiere, Part 2” – TWO-HOURS –SPECIAL CTV BROADCAST The Blind Auditions are held in front of coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, and Pharrell Williams, who each pick vocalists for their individual teams. The strongest vocalists from across the United States compete to be selected by one of the coaches and fight for a chance to win the title of being named THE VOICE. 10 p.m. – BEST TIME EVER WITH NEIL PATRICK HARRIS – LIVE – SPECIAL TIME Anything can happen on BEST TIME EVER WITH NEIL PATRICK HARRIS, which features appearances by A-list stars, stunts, comedy skits, incredible performances, mini game shows, audience giveaways, and hidden camera pranks. Based on the wildly popular British hit ANT & DEC’S SATURDAY NIGHT TAKEAWAY, this genre-busting format and its fearless star make for one of the best nights ever on TV, week after week.   Wednesday, Sept. 23 8:30 p.m. – THE GOLDBERGS – “A Kick-Ass Risky Business Party”– SEASON PREMIERE Lainey (AJ Michalka), Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and Barry (Troy Gentile) plan a big Risky Business-inspired party at her home while Lainey’s dad is out of town. Later, when the party gets out of control, Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) jumps to the rescue and Lainey is happy to have a mother figure like Beverly in her life, but for how long? Meanwhile, Adam’s (Sean Giambrone) relationship with Dana (Natalie Alyn Lind) angers Murray (Jeff Garlin) due to the hours he spends speaking to her on the phone. As a result, Adam tries a bunch of new ways to contact his long-distance love. 9 p.m. – THE AMAZING RACE CANADA –Here’s To You, Canada…Cheers” – SEASON FINALE THE AMAZING RACE CANADA draws to an exhilarating close as contestants race to the finish line and one team earns the title of Season 3 champions. With the biggest haul of prizes yet, the winning team will take home a $250,000 cash payout, “gas for life” from Petro-Canada, the opportunity to fly for a year anywhere Air Canada flies worldwide in Business Class, and two Chevrolet Colorado Trucks – the 2015 Motor Trend Truck of the Year, making it the largest grand prize ever awarded for a Canadian competition series. 10 p.m. – AFTER THE RACE – SPECIAL Immediately following the Season 3 finale of THE AMAZING RACE CANADA is the fan-favourite, one-hour after-show special, AFTER THE RACE. Shot live in front of a studio audience from CTV’s headquarters in Toronto and hosted by TSN’s James Duthie (@tsnjamesduthie), AFTER THE RACE reunites all 12 teams to re-live their most memorable moments, while also giving viewers a look at the exclusive first chat with the finalists and the newly crowned winners, just minutes after Canada learns who wins the race.   Thursday, Sept. 24 8 p.m. – GREY’S ANATOMY – “Sledgehammer” – SEASON PREMIERE Grey Sloan Memorial springs into action to save the lives of two young girls whose powerful story will force some of the doctors to revisit the effects of bullying on their own pasts. Meanwhile, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) must adjust to changes at home with her new roommates, while Bailey (Chandra Wilson) continues to fight for the Chief of Surgery position, and Jackson (Jesse Williams) prepares for April's (Sarah Drew) return to Seattle. 9 p.m. – SAVING HOPE – “Sympathy for the Devil” – SEASON PREMIERE Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) returns to work, arriving at Hope Zion Hospital with a car crash victim she encountered en route, and she’s forced to play nice with new General Surgeon on call, Dr. Patrick Curtis (Max Bennett, Anna Karenina). The day gets even more chaotic when Alex is called away to treat Ted Crenshaw (Travis Milne, ROOKIE BLUE), a convicted murderer brought in for emergency treatment. Meanwhile, Dr. Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) begins to confront his feelings about the paternity of Alex’s child, all while juggling an insistent Dr. Shahir Hamza (Huse Madhavji) who is looking for backup on his proposal for a new Alzheimer’s study. In the ER, Dr. Zach Miller’s (Benjamin Ayres) patient is admitted with symptoms mirroring those of Ebola – putting himself and Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) at risk of exposure to the deadly virus. 10 p.m. – HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER – “It's Time to Move On” SEASON PREMIERE Annalise (Viola Davis) and her students must move on with their lives as though nothing has happened, but the students are still reeling over Rebecca’s (Katie Findlay) disappearance. Only Annalise and Frank (Charlie Weber) know that Rebecca was murdered and the two are determined to find out who killed her. Meanwhile, Annalise decides she wants to take on a new client, a brother and sister who are accused of killing their parents.   Friday, Sept. 25 8 p.m. – THE AMAZING RACE – “A Little Too Much Beefcake (Rio de Janeiro)” – SEASON PREMIERE On the Season 27 premiere of THE AMAZING RACE, 11 new teams take off on the journey of a lifetime from Venice Beach, Calif. and head for Rio de Janeiro, where teams take a thrilling helicopter ride and face a huge decision at the Fast Forward. 9 p.m. – SHARK TANK – SEASON PREMIERE A dad from Wellington, FL has a way to make a baby’s feeding time easier with a device that new father and guest Shark Ashton Kutcher (TWO AND A HALF MEN) may be especially interested in; two men from Los Angeles skate into the Tank with a new high-tech form of wearable transportation; a culinary student from Detroit wants to bring old-fashioned drinking vinegars into the 21st century as a natural alternative to traditional sodas; and an identity theft and computer crimes expert from Sanford, FL has a solution to protect consumers from crowd-hack-attacks on credit and debit cards. 10 p.m. – BLUE BLOODS – “Worst Case Scenario” – SEASON PREMIERE On the season premiere of BLUE BLOODS, Frank (Tom Selleck) goes on high alert with an imminent threat posed to New York City following a terrorist attack in the Middle East.   Saturday, Sept. 26 8 p.m. – ONCE UPON A TIME – “Dark Swan Rises: A Once Upon A Time Fan Celebration” – SPECIAL Recap EPISODE In celebration of the Season 5 premiere, DARK SWAN RISES: A ONCE UPON A TIME FAN CELEBRATION, is an in-depth look at the magical series which will explore what happens next as Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) becomes the Dark One. The special will also highlight fan favourite characters and the incredible stories that have created a passionate fan base. Cast members will answer fan-submitted questions and discuss favourite moments as voted on by fans, giving viewers an authentic perspective as they dish on relationships and backstories.   Sunday, Sept. 27 8 p.m. – ONCE UPON A TIME – “The Dark Swan” – SEASON PREMIERE Immediately after becoming the Dark One, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) disappears and the heroes must band together to save her, but first they have to find her which will require the help of an unlikely ally. Meanwhile, in the Enchanted Forest, Emma struggles to resist her dark urges as she searches for Merlin (Elliot Knight, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER) in the hope that he can stop her transformation. Along the way to Camelot, she gets help from the plucky and brave warrior princess Merida (Amy Manson, ATLANTIS), as well as King Arthur (Liam Garrigan, 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY) and his Knights of the Round Table. 9 p.m. – BLOOD & OIL – “Pilot” – SERIES PREMIERE Billy (Chace Crawford) and Cody (Rebecca Rittenhouse) Lefever dream of a new life beyond their working class roots and move to The Bakken in North Dakota, booming after the biggest oil discovery in American history. They’re soon pitted against a ruthless oil tycoon, Hap Briggs (Don Johnson), who forces them to bet big and put everything on the line, including their marriage. 10 p.m. – QUANTICO – “Run” – SERIES PREMIERE This heart-pounding, conspiracy drama follows a diverse group of recruits as they arrive at the FBI Quantico Base for training. They are the best, the brightest, and the most vetted, so it seems impossible that one of them is suspected of masterminding the biggest attack on New York City since 9/11.   Monday, Sept. 28 7:30 p.m. – THE BIG BANG THEORY – “The Separation Oscillation” – NEW EPISODE Leonard (Johnny Galecki) confronts the woman he kissed on the North Sea in an attempt to set Penny's (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) mind at ease. Also, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) films a special episode of “Fun with Flags” after his breakup with Amy (Mayim Bialik), and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) feels guilty about withholding a secret from Penny. 8 p.m. – GOTHAM – “Knock, Knock” – NEW EPISODE Following his reinstatement, Gordon (Ben McKenzie) is thrust into the high-profile case tracking the deadly inmate escape from Arkham Asylum. So when Adam gets a lead role in the school musical, Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) convinces Ms. Cinoman (Ana Gasteyer, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE) to have Adam lip sync - just like the musical group Milli Vanilli - while performing in A Chorus Line. 9 p.m. – CRIMINAL MINDS – “The Job” – SEASON PREMIERE With the help of an impressive potential new team member, forensic psychologist Dr. Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler, ARCHER), the BAU searches for a serial killer who leaves distinctive marks on victims’ faces. 10 p.m. – CODE BLACK – “Pilot” – SERIES PREMIERE Set in the busiest and most notorious ER in the U.S., Angels Memorial Hospital, this medical drama follows LA County Hospital Residency Director, Doctor Leanne Royer (Marcia Gay Harden, THE NEWSROOM), as she trains her four new first year residents in her aggressive style of medicine borne out of her own shocking past.
