CTV Programming Highlights: September 16 – 30

The fall TV season begins as GOTHAM, FOREVER, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, and THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA make their series debuts, while MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., RESURRECTION, PERSON OF INTEREST, LAW & ORDER: SVU, GREY’S ANATOMY, THE AMAZING RACE, BLUE BLOODS, ONCE UPON A TIME, CSI, and CASTLE kick off new runs. CTV’s hit original medical drama SAVING HOPE also returns with a special two-night premiere event. Plus, new episodes of Space’s ORPHAN BLACK, and the season finale of CTV’s THE AMAZING RACE CANADA, followed immediately by the live, one-hour, after-show special AFTER THE RACE.

Tuesday, Sept. 16

9 p.m. – THE AMAZING RACE CANADA – “Put the Fun Back in Fundy” – NEW EPISODE

It’s the semifinals! Four teams race to New Brunswick to fight for a spot in the finale. But it’s an uphill battle as Racers claw their way through a grueling Roadblock. Teams face a blizzard of a time at an Acadian birthday party, but a complicated coastal Detour leaves teams desperately waving a white flag.

 

Wednesday, Sept. 17

10 p.m. – THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA – “Pilot” – SERIES PREMIERE – SPECIAL TIME

Emmy Award-winner Debra Messing (SMASH) stars in THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA as Laura Diamond, an extraordinarily gifted New York City police detective and extremely overrun mother of 6-year-old twin boys – a.k.a “the monsters.” Laura often throws off suspects by her disheveled demeanour, but her attention to detail and stellar hunches always pay off with an arrest (even if she does have oatmeal stuck in her hair). In contrast, she is usually one or two steps behind in her home life, maneuvering pre-school politics a little less deftly than those of the precinct, without much help from her soon-to-be ex-husband, Jake (Josh Lucas, Glory Road).

 

Friday, Sept. 19

9 p.m. – ORPHAN BLACK – “[To Hound] Nature in Her Wandering” – NEW TO CTV

Sarah (Tatiana Maslany) joins forces with an unlikely and untrustworthy ally, to follow a trail of clues that she hopes will lead her to the origins of the clone experiment. Meanwhile, Cosima (Maslany) and Delphine (Evelyne Brochu) make a discovery that could prove to be the key to treating her illness. Alison (Maslany) finds herself amongst unpleasant company, during her stay in rehab.

 

Sunday, Sept. 21

8 p.m. – THE AMAZING RACE CANADA – SEASON FINALE

The finish line is in sight! THE AMAZING RACE CANADA draws to an exhilarating close as contestants race to the finish line and earn the title of Season 2 champions. The biggest grand prize ever awarded for a Canadian competition series has expanded this season to include “gas for life” from Petro-Canada. In addition, the winning team once again receives a $250,000 cash payout and the opportunity to fly free for a year anywhere Air Canada flies worldwide in Business Class, plus two Chevrolet Silverado High Country Edition Pickup Trucks. Teams are also competing for special pit stop prizes courtesy of Air Canada and Scotiabank, to be revealed during the broadcast.

 

9 p.m. – AFTER THE RACE – SPECIAL

Immediately following the Season 2 finale of THE AMAZING RACE CANADA is the fan-favourite, one-hour after-show special, AFTER THE RACE. Shot live and hosted by TSN’s James Duthie (@tsnjamesduthie), AFTER THE RACE reunites all 11 teams to re-live their most memorable moments, while also giving viewers a look at the exclusive first chat with the finalists and the newly crowned winners, just minutes after Canada learns who wins the Race. Produced in front of a live studio audience from CTV’s headquarters in Toronto, this is THE AMAZING RACE CANADA’s second after-show special of the season, following the popular midseason special in August.   

 

Monday, Sept. 22

7 p.m. – THE BIG BANG THEORY – “The Locomotion Interruption” – SEASON PREMIERE – BACK-TO-BACK NEW EPISODES

Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) take an unexpected road trip to Arizona to pick up Sheldon (Jim Parsons). Meanwhile, Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) interviews for a job at Bernadette’s (Melissa Rauch) company, and Howard (Simon Helberg) is put-off by Stuart’s (Kevin Sussman) relationship with Mrs. Wolowitz (Carol Ann Susi).

 

7:30 p.m. – THE BIG BANG THEORY – “The Junior Professor Solution” – NEW EPISODE

When Sheldon (Jim Parsons) is forced to teach a class, Howard (Simon Helberg) surprises everyone by taking it. Meanwhile, the tension between Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) gives Amy (Mayim Bialik) a chance to play both sides.

 

8 p.m. – GOTHAM – “Pilot” – SERIES PREMIERE

The most-anticipated new series of the season traces the rise of the great DC Comics super-villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. Starring Ben McKenzie (SOUTHLAND) as Detective James Gordon, GOTHAM follows one cop, destined for greatness, as he navigates a dangerously corrupt city teetering between good and evil, and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular superheroes of our time – Batman. The series also stars Jada Pinkett Smith (HAWTHORNE) and Donal Logue (LAW & ORDER: SVU).

 

9 p.m. – SAVING HOPE – “Heaven Can Wait” – SEASON PREMIERE – SPECIAL TWO-PART FALL PREMIERE: PART ONE

In Part 1 of the special two-night Season 3 premiere event, after being stabbed in the heart in the Season 2 finale, Dr. Alex Reid (Erica Durance) has a profound experience in the liminal space, while a desperate Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks) and his ex – Dawn Bell (Michelle Nolden) – race against the clock to save her life. Meanwhile, Dr. Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies) is pulled in to the ER to treat a suicidal patient that tests his duty as a doctor, and Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) makes a bold decision that changes her relationship with Gavin Murphy (Kristopher Turner).

 

10 p.m. – FOREVER – “Pilot” – SERIES PREMIERE – SPECIAL TWO-NIGHT FALL PREMIERE: PART ONE

Dr. Henry Morgan’s (Ioan Gruffudd, Fantastic Four) exciting, adventurous, and intriguing long life has blessed him with amazing insight and observational skills. So, when Henry and Detective Jo Martinez (Alana De La Garza, LAW & ORDER: SVU) investigate a fatal subway collision, Jo is not only impressed, but her curiosity is peeked about who he is. Meanwhile, Henry soon discovers someone else knows his secret, and he may not be the only “immortal” out there. The one person who can inject hope into Henry's life is Abe (Judd Hirsch, DAMAGES), his best and only friend. Fate has brought the two men together and they share an unconventional bond. It's just part of the captivating mystery surrounding Henry's strange circumstances and his long search to uncover the cause of his condition and escape.

 

Tuesday, Sept. 23

8 p.m. – FOREVER – “Look Before You Leap” – SPECIAL TWO-NIGHT FALL PREMIERE: PART TWO – SPECIAL DAY AND TIME

After Henry (Ioan Gruffudd) pegs the case of a would-be bridge jumper as a homicide while the police label it a suicide, he and Jo (Alana De La Garza) go on a rogue investigation for proof. Meanwhile, Henry’s anonymous caller surfaces again and apparently he’s been tracking him for years. A letter on antique stationary might give Henry a fascinating clue about the caller, and he enlists Abe’s (Judd Hirsch) help in tracing the note’s history to a foreign locale. Revealing flashbacks unveil the beginning of Henry’s great love affair with his soon-to-be wife, Abigail (Mackenzie Mauzy, THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL).

 

9 p.m. – MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. – “Shadows” – SEASON PREMIERE – NEW TIMESLOT

Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources, but that’s not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. However, with new members they hardly know, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever be trusted again?

 

10 p.m. – PERSON OF INTEREST – “Panopticon” – SEASON PREMIERE

Forced to take on new identities created by Root (Amy Acker, CSI), the team tries to adapt to their new lives. However, some find it hard to ignore The Machine’s numbers, which puts them all at risk of being detected by Samaritan.

 

Wednesday, Sept. 24

8 p.m. – THE MYSTERIES OF LAURA – “The Mystery of the Dead Date” – NEW EPISODE – REGULAR TIMESLOT

When an online hook-up ends in murder, Laura (Debra Messing) creates her own dating website profile and – under Billy’s (Laz Alonso, DECEPTION) watchful eye – uses herself to bait the killer. While Laura goes undercover at Manhattan’s hottest night spots, Jake (Josh Lucas) finally inks the divorce papers, prompting Laura to reconsider the dating scene for real.

 

9 p.m. – LAW & ORDER: SVU – “Girls Disappeared” – SEASON PREMIERE

In the Season 16 premiere of LAW & ORDER: SVU, Sergeant Benson (Mariska Hargitay) juggles work and her new role as foster mother to baby Noah Porter, and Amaro (Danny Pino), now working the traffic beat in Queens, arrests an underage prostitute with connections to Noah’s mother Ellie (Emma Greenwell), who was brutally murdered. His undercover work sets off a chain of events that puts everyone connected to the case in danger. Meanwhile, a new detective assigned to Manhattan SVU (Peter Scanavino, THE LEFTOVERS) starts off on the wrong foot.

 

Thursday, Sept. 25

8 p.m. – GREY’S ANATOMY – “I Must Have Lost It on the Wind” – SEASON PREMIERE – SPECIAL TIMESLOT 

With Cristina (Sandra Oh) gone, a new doctor, Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary, EMILY OWENS, M.D.), is making the rounds. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) struggles to regain a sense of normalcy both at home and in the hospital, while Derek (Patrick Dempsey) wants to move to Washington, DC. Meanwhile, Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) come to a decision about surrogacy, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) overhears a big secret, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) realizes she will have to fight Alex (Justin Chambers) for Cristina’s board seat, and a freak accident causes two teenagers to be caught in a very compromising position.

 

9 p.m. – SAVING HOPE – “Kiss Me Goodbye” – SPECIAL TWO-PART FALL PREMIERE: PART TWO – REGULAR TIMESLOT  

The special Season 3 premiere event continues with Alex (Erica Durance) still in a coma, her spirit form shares an emotional journey with Charlie (Michael Shanks) in the spirit world as he ‘ghost-doctors’ a brain-dead mother-to-be. Meanwhile, Joel (Daniel Gillies) forms a tight bond with a lively drug addict while trying to treat his necrotic leg. Hope Zion Hospital also welcomes its new OB/GYN, Dr. Sydney Katz (Stacey Farber, DEGRASSI: THE NEXT GENERATION), who throws Maggie (Julia Taylor Ross) off her game.

 

10 p.m. – HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER – “Pilot” – SERIES PREMIERE

The brilliant, charismatic, and seductive Professor Annalise Keating (Viola Davis, LAW & ORDER: SVU) gets entangled with four law students from her class in HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. Little do they know that they will have to apply what they learned to real life, in this masterful, sexy, suspense-driven legal thriller from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, executive producers of GREY’S ANATOMY and  SCANDAL.

 

Friday, Sept. 26

8 p.m. – THE AMAZING RACE – SEASON PREMIERE – NEW DAY

9 p.m. – ORPHAN BLACK – “Knowledge of Causes, and Secret Motion of Things” – NEW TO CTV

On the eve of Family Day, Alison (Tatiana Maslany) goes into free fall when a rehab confidante betrays her by threatening to expose the truth about Aynsley’s (Natalie Lisinska) death. It’s all clones on deck to contain the fallout, for Donnie (Kristian Bruun) and the kids visit.

 

10 p.m. – BLUE BLOODS – “Partners" – SEASON PREMIERE

In the Season 5 premiere of BLUE BLOODS, as Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Baez (Marisa Ramirez) escort confiscated drugs to a remote location for incineration, their convoy is attacked and Baez is seriously injured, leaving Danny to track down the drug cartel responsible. Meanwhile, Frank (Tom Selleck) must carefully navigate personal and political waters when an exemplary lieutenant's actions cause controversy for the NYPD.

 

Sunday, Sept. 28

8 p.m. – ONCE UPON A TIME – “A Tale of Two Sisters” – SEASON PREMIERE – NEW TIMESLOT 

A scared and confused Elsa (Georgina Haig, RECKLESS) finds herself in Storybrooke fearful of the intentions of its residents, and creates a powerful snow monster for protection. With Robin Hood’s wife, Marian (Christie Laing, ARROW), back in the picture, Regina (Lana Parrilla) wonders if her “happily ever after” with the former thief has been completely crushed, while on their honeymoon, Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) finds an intriguing object that makes him question whether or not he should officially give Belle (Emilie de Ravin) control over the dagger that makes him The Dark One. Meanwhile, Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) is dismayed to discover that Emma (Jennifer Morrison) seems to be avoiding him while she tries to help comfort Regina after being the one responsible for bringing Marian back from the past and into Storybrooke.

 

9 p.m. – RESURRECTION – “Revelation” – SEASON PREMIERE – NEW TO CTV

Bellamy (Omar Epps, HOUSE) awakens alone and abandoned at Arcadia’s outskirts, missing a week of his life. As his memory returns, he has a shocking revelation. Meanwhile, Arcadia welcomes one more returned, Margaret Langston (Michelle Fairley, GAME OF THRONES), the powerful matriarch of the Langston family, dead for over three decades.

 

10 p.m. – CSI – “The CSI Effect” – SEASON PREMIERE – NEW DAY  

Finlay (Elisabeth Shue) must deal with a bomb planted in her car, while Russell (Ted Danson) receives a call from someone claiming to be the Gig Harbor killer.

 

Monday, Sept. 29

8 p.m. – GOTHAM – “Selina Kyle” – NEW EPISODE

Detectives Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Bullock (Donal Logue) investigate a child trafficking ring preying on Gotham’s street kids, including Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova). Meanwhile, Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) resurfaces in the countryside and begins to make his way back to Gotham, leaving victims in his wake.

9 p.m. – FOREVER – NEW EPISODE – REGULAR TIMESLOT

10 p.m. – CASTLE – “Driven” – SEASON PREMIERE

In the Season 6 finale, as Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) drove to his much-anticipated nuptials, an ominous black SUV bore down on him. Meanwhile, after waiting in vain for Castle to arrive at the wedding, Beckett (Stana Katic) was called to an accident scene to find his car in a ravine, engulfed in flames. The Season 7 premiere picks-up at the scene of the accident, putting Beckett through the toughest case of her career.

 

Tuesday, Sept. 30

9 p.m. – MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. – “Heavy is the Head” – NEW EPISODE

Hunted and running out of solutions, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) puts his team right in the line of fire in the hopes of saving them all. But with General Talbot (Adrian Pasdar), Hydra (Ben Turner Nixon), and Creel (Brian Patrick Wade) all on the attack, can they possibly survive? Meanwhile, a mysterious Doctor (Kyle MacLachlan, BELIEVE) harbours some dangerous secrets that could destroy one of our core team members.

10 p.m. – PERSON OF INTEREST – “Nautilus” – NEW EPISODE

Although Finch (Michael Emerson) insists that he no longer wishes to help with new numbers, his interest is piqued when Reese (Jim Caviezel) learns that the newest POI is a brilliant college student engaged in a mysterious, life-and-death scavenger hunt.
