TORONTO (July 4, 2014) – This summer, Canadian armchair critics can finally have their voices heard from the comfort of their own living rooms. On Sunday, July 13 at 8:30 p.m. ET, Bravo’s newest, original unscripted series The People’s Couch, welcomes viewers into the homes of real Canadians, as they settle in to watch the week’s must-see TV. Based on the U.K. hit Gogglebox, which is commissioned by Channel 4 from Studio Lambert, and THE PEOPLE’S COUCH stateside (Bravo, U.S. by Studio Lambert and all3media America), the series is part of an international phenomenon, licensed through all3media International, with adaptations around the world including China and Ireland. The 10-episode, half-hour reality series features eight viewing groups of avid TV fans reacting to, and deliberating on, the buzziest shows of the past week.
“THE PEOPLE’S COUCH is an honest, raw and compelling program which has resonated with audiences around the world.” said Catherine MacLeod, Senior Vice-President, Specialty Channels and Bell Media Production. “It’s the perfect addition to Bravo’s stable of clever and immersive programming.”
“I came across this phenomenon when I was looking for an innovative new format,” said Thomas Howe, Executive Producer, THE PEOPLE’S COUCH. “Shortly after GOGGLEBOX premiered in the U.K., I was impressed by the reaction of fans who demanded more episodes ASAP. Watching people watch television is surprisingly compelling and we are thrilled to bring this deceptively simple and highly addictive show to Bravo.”

Originally produced by Studio Lambert, a subsidiary of the all3media group of companies, for Channel 4, GOGGLEBOX premiered in March 2013 and its third season, which concluded in May 2014, was consistently Channel 4’s highest rated series, averaging 2.3 million viewers. Starting as a cult favourite in October 2013, THE PEOPLE’S COUCH on Bravo (U.S.), recently delivered a series high with 655,000 total viewers in its late-night timeslot (Nielsen), and has expanded into a one-hour format.
Meet some of Canada’s armchair critics:
Shirlene, Jizelle, & Chrield
Originally from Trinidad, this close-knit family says television brings them together, but can sometimes divide them. There’s always plenty of heated debate over what to watch, sometimes fuelled by a glass of wine, or two.
Shirlene complains she hardly ever gets to control the remote. When Jizelle sees something she hates on TV, she can’t help voice her opinion. Meanwhile, Matriarch, Chrield, gets very uncomfortable watching shows that have a lot of sexual content.
Kenny & Tara
It wasn’t love at first sight, but after three years of dating Kenny and Tara decided to move in together. In their cozy abode, they love watching television curled up with their lion-sized cat, Charles. Tara cries when she sees disturbing things on TV and is not a fan of watching the nightly news. But she still has plenty to say about the state of world. Kenny likes to play devil’s advocate, and frequently challenges Tara about her opinions.
Kathy, Mary Ann, & Cheri
These lifelong friends love to get together at Mary Ann’s house to gab, gossip, and watch TV, all in the comfort of a king-sized bed.
Kathy has strong opinions about today’s television shows, and a strong sense of intuition. In fact, she’s the neighbourhood clairvoyant. Kathy’s cousin, Mary Ann, is a mom to three, grown-up children and also a DJ.
Cheri is the most adventurous of the trio and her hobbies include rock climbing, skateboarding, and opera.
Jordan & Nic
These friends and business partners, run a local gym, and still find the time to watch hours of TV together each week.
Nic enjoys all genres and when he’s immersed in a juicy storyline, he loves to tuck into his favourite snack - a big plate of fruit.
Jordan approaches an evening of TV-watching like a professional athlete, by whipping up a protein-rich smoothie before a big marathon.
Sylvia & David
After 22 years of marriage, these retired teachers may have found the secret to marital bliss – watching TV together!
A saxophonist in a jazz band and a painter, David loves talent shows.
Sylvia is originally from Britain and her favourite television show is Coronation Street. In fact, she remembers the very first episode, which aired in 1960.
Ken & Natasha
Ken and Natasha have been together for 14 years and are expecting their second child in August.
Natasha is a business analyst and trouble-shooter at work, and at home. She loves legal dramas, romantic comedies, and cooking shows.
A photographer and filmmaker, Ken likes to watch high-action dramas and comedies.
Kate, “Miss Icy” & Terry
For this family, an evening of watching their favourite shows wouldn’t be the same without a plate of cake.
Kate is home-schooled, and loves to kick back with a glass of soda while watching news and current affairs.
Miss Icy likes to sing along and dance when she watches entertainment competition shows. She’s a cool 70-year-old.
Terry likes to watch shows that entertain and inspire, especially shows that allow her to reflect on life and on her relationship with her teen daughter, Kate.
Ben & Star
These binge-watchers met in a forest during a fantasy fight. After Ben offered Star his foam sword, it was love at first sight and the couple got married within a year.
Ben is a video editor. One of his favourite shows is My Little Pony because he says it’s full of magical life lessons.
Star recently left behind her event planning business to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a writer.
