TORONTO (March 5, 2014) – HBO Canada presents DOLL & EM, a six-episode comedy series from HBO starring real-life best friends Emily Mortimer (HBO’s THE NEWSROOM) and Dolly Wells (Bridget Jones’s Diary), as they portray fictionalized versions of themselves. DOLL & EM premieres Wednesday, March 19 at 10 p.m. ET/MT, with two half-hour episodes airing back-to-back, followed by two episodes on both of the subsequent Wednesdays, March 26 and April 2, on HBO Canada. DOLL & EM airs day-and-date with HBO in the U.S. HBO Canada is a multiplex channel of Bell Media’s The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (Western Canada).
Written by and starring real-life best friends Mortimer and Wells, DOLL & EM is a semi-improvised comedy exploring what happens when a Hollywood actress hires her childhood friend as a personal assistant while making a film in Los Angeles. The series delivers a bittersweet, intimate portrait of female friendship, as their relationship endures unexpected complications and surprising twists. The behind-the-scenes comedy sheds light on Hollywood’s inner circle and showcases the daily absurdities of celebrity. DOLL & EM includes cameo appearances from Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Susan Sarandon (Cloud Atlas), John Cusack (Lee Daniel’s The Butler), Chloë Sevigny (THOSE WHO KILL), and Andy Garcia (Ocean’s Trilogy).
Emily Mortimer is well-known for her role as MacKenzie McHale in Aaron Sorkin’s Emmy® Award-winning HBO series THE NEWSROOM. Mortimer’s other big-screen and television credits include: Hugo, Shutter Island, Lovely & Amazing, and 30 ROCK. Dolly Wells appeared in HBO’s THE GATHERING STORM; other roles include SPY, Bridget Jones’s Diary, CAMPUS, STAR STORIES, and Franklyn.
DOLL & EM is produced by King Bee Productions, Emily Mortimer, and Alessandro Nivola’s production company. Executive produced by Andrew Eaton (THE TRIP) and Lucy Lumsden (MOONE BOY), BSKYB's head of comedy. Produced by Alessandro Nivola, Stacia Peters (THE NEWSROOM) and Kevin Comer (Expecting) serve as co-producers.
