CALGARY, AB (September 27, 2013) – CTV Calgary is getting ready to swap cameras and microphones for shovels, hoes, and rakes as they volunteer to resuscitate the backyard of the Children’s Cottage Society, a local organization that helps vulnerable children whose families are experiencing times of crisis. During the week of Sept. 30 to Oct. 4, the Backyard Rescue will see CTV Calgary anchors and reporters working with experts at the Golden Acre Garden Sentre to makeover the nursery’s backyard, which was damaged by Calgary’s devastating flood this past June.

Like many of the organizations impacted by the flood, the Children’s Cottage Society suffered a substantial amount of damage, leaving the backyard almost unusable for the children it hosts. Viewers can watch coverage throughout the week on CTV MORNING LIVE, CTV NEWS AT NOON, CTV NEWS AT FIVE, CTV NEWS AT 5:30 p.m., CTV NEWS AT SIX, and CTV NEWS AT 11:30 p.m., as the CTV Calgary team and Golden Acre Garden Sentre transform the backyard into a fun, safe, and beautiful place for children of all ages to play.

“Our city suffered a great deal of destruction as a result of the flooding that took place this past summer,” said Len Perry, CTV Calgary Vice-President and General Manager. “Our entire team – both in front of the camera and behind the scenes - is eager to support the community we live and work in by helping the Children’s Cottage Society reinvigorate their space so that they can continue the important work of supporting the children who need it most.”

“Many of the families that reach out to us have no place else to turn. Thanks to the work of CTV and Golden Acre Garden Sentre, we will be able to continue to provide support to more than 1,300 vulnerable children this year whose parents have no one to turn to,” said Patty Kilgallon, Executive Director, Children’s Cottage Society.

The Children’s Cottage Society is a 14-bed emergency child care centre that is available to the community free of charge. Newborns to children of eight years of age can stay at the nursery for up to 72 hours while their parents resolve a crisis or take the time to rest and regroup. Providing support to families since 1986, the Children’s Cottage Society also provides educational programs for parents of newborns and transitional programs for families experiencing homelessness.
