The documentary follows the journey of Craig Ewert, a 59-year-old diagnosed with ALS who makes the decision to end his life via assisted suicide, and George and Betty Coumbias, a Canadian couple in their early seventies, who have been dealing with George’s deteriorating heart condition and the knowledge that he only has a few years to live. Originally from Chicago, Craig lives with his wife Mary in England. He endures considerable pain on a daily basis due to the disease and five months after his diagnosis, he arrives in Switzerland for his scheduled assisted suicide. The film documents Craig’s final days as he and his wife discuss the decision to commit assisted suicide. The Coumbias are pushing the boundaries of Dignitas and the Swiss law, with George planning to take his own life before his health and quality of living completely deteriorate – a typical situation for Dignitas. But Betty, who is in perfect health, wants to die with her husband, whenever George is ready to go.
