When you look to the stars, you see Cassiøpeia - it all makes perfect sense!
Season 2 of CTV’s fast-paced, music series THE LAUNCH debuted last night, and the first “Launched artist” is Cassiøpeia. She’s a talented 17-year-old, from Burnaby, B.C., whose maturity and versatility impressed world-renowned music executive Scott Borchetta, mentor Marie-Mai, and celebrity mentor/music producer Ryan Tedder in the first episode of the new season.
With Cassiøpeia’s version of the Ryan Tedder song “Better” now available on music services everywhere, she filled us in on her exciting, whirlwind experience on THE LAUNCH:
Q: How did you decide to try out for the show?Cassiøpeia: “Well, there’s a bit of a story to that one. I watched the show last year and I remember seeing Logan Staats perform. I looked to my mom and my dad and my brother and I said, ‘You know what? I could do that next year. That could be me.’ So when I saw the auditions for it, I immediately said to myself, ‘What do you have to lose? Just go out and try.’ And looked what happened! It’s really amazing.”
Q: When you told people you were going to audition for THE LAUNCH, did everyone encourage you, or were there any naysayers?Cassiøpeia: “No, my mom, my dad and my brother have always been so supportive of my music. So when I told them, they just said, ‘Go for it.’ But other than them, I didn’t actually tell anyone. I didn’t even tell my grandma, and she would have loved to know. But she knows now, and she’s over-the-moon excited.”
Q: Your age was noted several times in the episode. Does it bother you when people focus on how young you are? Cassiøpeia: “I don’t think I necessarily get sick of it. Usually when I say I’m that young, they’re very surprised. It depends, some people say, ‘Oh, she’s so young, what can she do?’ But I’ve always been mature for my age, and I think it’s a good thing, because I don’t want people to underestimate me for my age. I do work hard, and I’m passionate about making a career for myself.”
Q: Upon hearing the song “Better”, did you instantly believe it was perfect for you, or did you think you were going to have to stretch outside your comfort zone to make it work?Cassiøpeia: “When I first heard it, and Ryan explained a bit about it, I was like, ‘This is the type of music that I want to release.’ I went back to the hotel room and I said, ‘I need to fight for this song. In the studio and in performance, I just have to give it 110% times a million!’ ”
Q: Um, they told me there would be no math during this interview. But I think that’s a lot.Cassiøpeia: “It’s a lot! But even if the song wasn’t in my genre, I would find a way to put my own flavour into it. If it were a different genre, I would make it my own.”
And now, THE LAST WORD; here’s what Scott Borchetta had to say about Cassiøpeia:Scott Borchetta: “Cassiøpeia has a super unique voice. And I personally love her influences. She comes out and says, well, Vance Joy, and Prince, and David Bowie, and she embodies some of those very important and interesting alternative - but mainstream - artists. So she is beyond her years in artistic vision.”
