TORONTO (June 16, 2016) – TSN today announced that Waterloo, Ont. native and former USA TODAY hockey writer Kristen Shilton (@kristen_shilton) is returning to Canada to join Canada’s Sports Leader as a reporter covering the Toronto Maple Leafs throughout the year for and TSN Radio 1050 Toronto – the team’s official radio broadcaster. Shilton’s role commences as she covers the Maple Leafs for TSN platforms leading into next weekend’s NHL Draft in Buffalo. Holding the first overall pick, the team is projected to select top prospect Auston Matthews. "Working for TSN was always my dream when I started out in journalism,” said Shilton. “The team has done such a great job of providing fair and balanced coverage and interesting commentary, and as a journalist, that’s incredibly important to me. Equally important, I wanted to be somewhere that embraces digital media. It’s changed the game and is vital to how journalists cover news.” “Kristen’s skilled writing and reporting make her an excellent addition to TSN’s all-star roster,” said Ken Volden, Vice-President and Executive Producer, Studio Production, and News and Information, TSN. “She lives and breathes social and digital media and knows how to play in those spaces. Shilton joins TSN from USA TODAY, where she worked as a digital sports producer and hockey writer for the past two seasons. She reported on a slate of major sporting events including the NHL playoffs, and contributed stories both in print and online for USA TDOAY and its pop culture-sports hybrid site, For The Win. She also produced sports news content for USA TODAY’s social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook. Prior to her time at USA TODAY, Shilton spent nearly two years with the Chicago Wolves, the Vancouver Canucks’ American Hockey League affiliate, beginning as a Communications Assistant and then as the team’s Digital Media Coordinator. Shilton holds a Master of Arts degree in Magazine, Newspaper, and Online Journalism at Syracuse University. Before earning her M.A. she graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a B.A. in English and then followed up with a Post-Graduate Certificate in Sports Journalism at Loyalist College.
