WINDSOR (October 23, 2014) – Part trick, all treat: AM580 today unveiled plans to air one of the most infamous radio broadcasts of all time this coming Halloween night. THE WAR OF THE WORLDS is slated to take over the airwaves on Friday, Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. ET, upholding AM580’s annual tradition of airing the original, 1938 historic broadcast, uncut and commercial free.
“We hope our listeners will be both entertained and a little spooked as they relive this classic drama from the golden age of radio,” said Eric Proksch, General Manager, AM580. “We have been airing THE WAR OF THE WORLDS every Halloween since the 1990s – it’s a Halloween tradition that we are proud to continue.”
THE WAR OF THE WORLDS was originally broadcast in 1938 as part of the historic Mercury Theature on the Air program. Based on the H.G. Wells science fiction novel about an alien invasion, this radio adaptation was directed and narrated by the legendary Orson Welles. Despite numerous disclaimers, the simulated news bulletins caused widespread panic across the country over the belief that Martians had landed in Grover’s Mill, New Jersey.
THE WAR OF THE WORLDS broadcast on AM580 is sponsored exclusively by Doc Sweets’ Candy Company – Clawson, Michigan’s largest retail candy store.
