TORONTO (July 3, 2014) – In the 2012 two-part special presentation ALIEN ENCOUNTERS, Discovery imagined what it could look like if E.T. actually did make contact, theorizing how “The Message” (Part 1) and “The Arrival” (Part 2) might reach Earth. Now, back with a thrilling new two-part instalment, ALIEN ENCOUNTERS returns to Discovery on Sunday, July 27 at 8 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT. Seamlessly blending cutting-edge science with dramatic science fiction, ALIEN ENCOUNTERS examines how extraterrestrials might communicate with humans – and its potential ramifications. Interspersed with the dramatizations, the two-part follow-up employs world-leading astronomers, futurists and scientists providing expertise and context to the potential cultural, biological and technological impact of extraterrestrial contact.
PROGRAM NOTE: Parts 1 and 2 of ALIEN ENCOUNTERS will re-air on Sunday, July 27 beginning at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT
First, there was “The Message,” then “The Arrival.” ALIEN ENCOUNTERS’ new episodes pick up immediately following these events with“The Invasion” (8 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT) and “The Offspring” (9 p.m. ET/10 p.m. PT). A swarm of alien spacecraft hover in the Earth's atmosphere and suddenly deposit thousands of mysterious capsules on the surface. As the mother ship floats ominously silent in Earth's orbit the capsules begin to split and multiply as humans scramble to brace for the unknown. How will mankind respond to the extraterrestrial presence? Will humans panic in fear or show restraint? How will humans understand the alien's motives if there is no common language or technology? And, what happens when mankind sends an ambassador shuttle to the mother ship?
