Here’s what the critics have been saying about TRUE DETECTIVE:
“McConaughey is not the only reason TRUE DETECTIVE is astonishing viewing, of course: Woody Harrelson has deepened and matured as well. As the slow-burning, oddly compelling murder mystery moves effortlessly towards its season finale this weekend, it has pulled off a remarkable feat.” – Alex Strachan, Postmedia News, via Twitter
“TRUE DETECTIVE is a series which draws the viewer in with big names but the story and format are ultimately the star.” – Jon Dekel, Postmedia News
“TRUE DETECTIVE is a dark, brooding and exceptionally well-acted series about former Louisiana State CID partners Marty Hart (Harrelson) and Rust Cohle (McConaughey).” – Bill Harris, QMI Agency
“The ensuing, astonishing sequence – a raid on a drug house that goes terribly wrong – elevated TRUE DETECTIVE from a brooding, slow-moving exploration of character to an epic action drama.” – John Doyle, The Globe and Mail
“The HBO series is already being called the next smart show – the next [THE] SOPRANOS, the next [THE] WIRE,” said Russell Smith, The Globe and Mail. “Its mix of horror and philosophy, its linguistic clues and puzzles, its poetic anti-hero, its complex non-linear chronology all make it both viscerally gripping and intellectually dense. I am fully immersed.”
“HBO's TRUE DETECTIVE is so good I almost can't stand watching it.” – Malene Arpe, The Toronto Star
“The action was ratcheted up until it reached a thrilling climax filmed using some of the most spectacular camera work ever seen on television.” – Laura Russell, TV Guide Canada
“I think it's McConaughey's best work – and that's saying something given his past half-dozen roles or so – Mud, Killer Joe, Wolf of Wall Street, Bernie etc.” – Eric Volmers, Calgary Herald
“What makes these men tick and ultimately unravel is the true mystery at the heart of the show.” – Pat Lee, The Chronicle Herald
“TRUE DETECTIVE is the kind of show that's so good, the next day I have to read recaps to make sure I understood it.” – Brent Piaskoski, executive producer and creator of CTV’s SPUN OUT, via Twitter
“TRUE DETECTIVE is like a punch in your soul’s junk. Like, the good kind ...” – Fearless Fred, 102.1 THE EDGE, via Twitter
“I’m fully invested with this show and I can’t wait to see where “TRUE DETECTIVE” takes us from here.” – Blair Marnell, Craveonline.com
“There is something exceptional going on with TRUE DETECTIVE that goes beyond the ambitious narrative structure, the all-star pairing of lead actors (Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey) and the kind of direction that can make you want to freeze frame your PVR and hang a single shot on your wall as a mantle-piece-worthy visual art item.” – Peter Counter, Dorkshelf.com
TRUE DETECTIVE is an eight-episode, one-hour anthology series starring A-listers Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detectives whose lives collide and entwine during a 17-year hunt for a killer. Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson) worked the macabre 1995 murder of a prostitute by a possible serial killer with disturbing occult leanings. In 2012, for reasons not immediately revealed, the two are interviewed separately by investigators about this notorious case. As they look back on the case, Hart and Cohle’s personal backstories and often-strained relationship become a major focal point. Hart, an outgoing native Louisianan and family man whose marriage is being frayed by work stress and infidelity, is (at least on the surface) the polar opposite of Cohle, a lone-wolf pessimist and former narcotics detective from Texas. While the plot moves forward by their shared obsession to hunt down the ritual killer, the true drama centres around the mercurial nature of Hart and Cohle’s relationship and personalities, and how they affect each other as detectives, friends, and men. Michelle Monaghan (Source Code) stars as Hart’s wife who struggles to keep her family together as the men in her life become locked in a cycle of violence and obsession.
Following the finale of TRUE DETECTIVE, subscribers can catch the season finale of HBO’s comedy series LOOKING airing at 10:30 p.m. ET/MT on HBO Canada. In the final episode, Patrick (Jonathan Groff) looks to mend fences after Richie’s (Raúl Castillo) abrupt exit the previous day. Frank (O.T. Fagbenle) tells Agustín (Frankie J. Alvarez) what he really thinks about their relationship and his art. Later, Patrick and Agustín join Dom (Murray Bartlett) at the opening of his pop-up restaurant, where Dom is surprised by Lynn’s (Scott Bakula) choice of guest.
