Three Rotten-Luck Stories For This Friday the 13th

— October 13, 2017

Friday the 13th makes us aware of the role that randomness and chance can play in shaping our lives. While many will watch out for sidewalk cracks and black cats today, we propose that if it wasn’t for bad luck, we wouldn’t have some of our best stories. Here are three shows streaming on CraveTV that put characters in the wrong place at the wrong time. Consider yourself warned – spoilers ahead.
  1. THE NIGHT OF
(Barry Wetcher/HBO)

Naz Khan’s (Riz Ahmed) ill-fated decision to pick up a young woman in his dad’s cab sets off a deadly series of events in this Emmy-winning limited series from HBO. (See also: Naz’s attorney John Stone’s [John Turturro] truly unfortunate case of eczema).
  1. THE AFFAIR & The Death of Scotty
(Steven Lippman/SHOWTIME)
(Steven Lippman/SHOWTIME)
The Season 1 finale of this watercooler drama from SHOWTIME sees the fates of several lead characters collide. Literally. While defending herself against uber-jerk Scott Lockhart (Colin Donnell), Alison (Ruth Wilson) throws him into the darkened road just in time for Scotty to be struck and killed by a speeding Helen (Maura Tierney), drunk-driving Noah’s (Dominic West) car. Noah takes the rap for this one-in-a-million accident, inspiring a two-season story arc.
  1. ORPHAN BLACK
(SPACE)
(SPACE)
This award-winning, made-in-Canada, sci-fi series is set in motion when fate brings Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany) to a train station where she witnesses her doppelgänger commit suicide. Over five seasons, Manning’s identity search makes us examine the role of DNA in our destiny. So if you have bad luck this Friday the 13th, maybe it’s you.
