TORONTO (September 29, 2015) – TSN was honoured with two awards at last night’s 2015 OMMA (Online Marketing Media and Advertising) Awards in New York City, winning Web Site Excellence in the Sports and Best in Show (overall) categories for its immersive microsite complementing the TSN Original Feature FAVELA UNITED.
FAVELA UNITED saw TSN Senior Correspondent Rick Westhead travel to the favelas of Brazil to investigate the impact of soccer on a brave group of young women. The broadcast feature was produced by TSN’s Canadian Screen Award-winning Senior Feature Producer Josh Shiaman as part of CTV/TSN’s comprehensive coverage of the FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP CANADA 2015™.
Combining striking photography, audio, and video from FAVELA UNITED with a powerful long-form essay from Westhead that delved deeper into street soccer culture in Brazil, TSN’s immersive microsite marked the network’s first foray into digital storytelling.
“FAVELA UNITED is a fantastic example of the value of a cross-platform venture. It provided us with rich, compelling content that we were able to share on broadcast and on digital,” said Ken Volden, Vice-President and Executive Producer, News and Information, TSN. “The fact that the digital component was recognized is further proof that great stories can and should be told across multiple platforms.”
Honoured alongside The Working Group, a Toronto-based digital design firm, TSN beat out high-profile nominations from HBO, IBM, and Spotify, among others.
