TORONTO (June 24, 2014) – Fast-forwarding three years after the fateful day when 140 million people vanished into thin air during a global, rapture-like “departure,” HBO’s new one-hour drama series THE LEFTOVERS premieres Sunday, June 29 at 10 p.m. ET/MT on HBO Canada. Written by Emmy® Award winner Damon Lindelof (LOST) and based on Academy Award® nominee Tom Perrotta’s (Little Children) bestselling novel of the same name, the ten-episode series explores the aftermath of the departure in the town of Mapleton and follows residents as they try to cope with loss in a world that has changed before their eyes.

In the series premiere, it’s been three years since millions of people vanished into thin air. Residents of Mapleton, NY weigh the pros and cons of a “Heroes Day” tribute to the local “Departed.” Attempting to maintain a sense of normalcy in his strained community, police chief Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux, HBO’s SIX FEET UNDER) faces additional challenges at home with his daughter, Jill (Margaret Qualley, Palo Alto), who’s lost in a cloud of apathy with her friend Aimee (Emily Meade, That Awkward Moment), and son, Tom (Chris Zylka, The Amazing Spider-Man), who has gravitated to a cult led by the charismatic Holy Wayne (Paterson Joseph, LAW & ORDER: UK). Also of concern is a silent, white-clad group of chain-smoking men and women called the Guilty Remnant, who team up in pairs to stake out people and places around town. As tension in Mapleton escalates, the lives of Laurie (Amy Brenneman, PRIVATE PRACTICE), an unexpected member of the Guilty Remnant, and Meg (Liv Tyler, The Strangers), a recently engaged young woman, converge.

Peter Berg (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS) directed the pilot from a script by Emmy Award winner Damon Lindelof (LOST) and acclaimed novelist Tom Perrotta. Lindelof and Perrotta executive produce THE LEFTOVERS along with Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey (HBO’s THE FIGHT GAME WITH JIM LAMPLEY); Ron Yerxa (Nebraska) and Albert Berger (Nebraska) co-executive produce. The series is produced for HBO by Adventure Corps in association with Warner Bros. Television.
